Mum and baby osteopathy clinic

The Mum’s and Baby Osteopathy Clinic was established at the Osteopath Clapham following the completion of my postgraduate studies in Paediatric Osteopathy and Women’s Health. The clinic runs throughout the week offering support for pregnant and postpartum mums, newborns, infants, toddlers and children with learning and behavioural difficulties. For mums, treatment is on hand for the various aches and pains associated with pregnancy, along with post-labour pelvic floor MOT’s. Expert, primary care-level, cranial osteopathy check-ups are available for newborns and the treatment of children, from infant to toddler to teenage, is offered.

Breastfeeding and tongue tie

An area of specialism is that of breastfeeding and tongue tie. At the Osteopath Clapham I work in close collaboration with local lactation consultants, midwives and tongue tie specialists to find non-interventional solutions to lactation issues through osteopathy.

Neurodevelopment

Another area of particular interest is that of neurodevelopment. This is the way in which, through the proliferation of neurological pathways, the body and brain grow together. When we are very small it is our movement that drives our neurodevelopment. I move my head. I see my hand. I start to develop hand-eye co-ordination, tracking and near vision. The former is in the body, the latter in the brain. The connection is the neurological pathway. But what happens if head rotation is restricted? Answer, the movement pattern is restricted and the resultant neurological pathway is not the same. The brain of a child who has been hampered in their movement is, quite literally, different from that of a child who has not. It is these differences that often show up later in life as learning or behavioural difficulties such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADHD, ADD or Asperger’s. Having worked with older children in the area of neurological rehabilitation, I have developed a determination to iron out the musculoskeletal imbalances that cause such problems in the first place.
